Robert John Muir grew up in Battery Point, a suburb of Hobart, Tasmania which adjoins the waterfront Salamanca area and nearby Sandy Bay. Coming from a long line of mariners and with his father’s advice, John created the first Muir anchor winches with his father’s saying in mind:

“Make sure the winch you design and build is stronger than the deck it’s bolted down to.”
