It’s Winter – Why Should I Think About a Dry Bilge System?

The end of February for most of the country usually means short daylight hours, cold weather, severe winter storms, and more time indoors. It’s hard to plan for the upcoming summer boating season when snow and ice are on your doorstop and your boat is shrink wrapped on blocks or covered at your dock.
Shrink wrapping can create the perfect conditions for bilge condensation and moisture, since weatherproof polyethylene is not self-ventilating. If the shrink wrap has any gaps or poorly sealed areas, extra water can enter your boat during the off-season and settle in your bilge, further contributing to mold, mildew, corrosion and cabin odor. Water can even enter an outdoor covered boat through:
· Leaks around windows, hatches, worn seals, consoles, thru-hulls or other openings
· Open vents, unsealed areas, anchor lockers, rod holders, or other outside drains
· Seepage through cracks or minor damage in the hull
· Water from melting snow draining into the bilge
Neglected bilge water from the winter months can lead to bacteria thriving in the dark, damp bilge compartment, which results in persistent cabin odors, extra cleaning, mold, mildew and corrosion on mechanical and electrical equipment. Unfortunately, due to the size and design of your boat’s primary bilge pump, usually a half inch or more of water remains in your bilge even after winter clearing. Primary bilge pumps are designed to remove large amounts of water quickly, but they are not designed to create a completely dry bilge environment.
Midwinter is the best time to start thinking about adding a dry bilge system solution to your spring commissioning checklist. The BILGE-B-DRY, Dry Bilge System can help remove every last inch of water from your bilge to get to the source of cabin odor, mold, mildew and corrosion. With four pump configurations available to meet your power needs in 12vdc or 24vdc, BILGE-B-DRY’s diaphragm pump(s) can run dry without damage. With a robust yet compact design and newly added quick disconnect wiring harness, installation is simple in horizontal or vertical orientations. BILGE-B-DRY can run on its own internal schedule, or you can customize pump operation with the free Mobile App for smart devices. Better yet, if you need connectivity to a helm switch or water sensor, the new wiring harness allows for this additional connection. Each BILGE-B-DRY unit comes with one to four low profile, bilge water pickups which can be placed in hard-to-reach bilge locations for efficient water removal. The environmentally friendly, replaceable pickup filter material allows for easy service every few months in-season.
